I was chatting to a young ex-Exclusive Brethren member not too long ago, and she had some fascinating responses regarding growing up in their church. She kindly gave me permission to post her replies.

What made your parents start having questions about EB?

Well my parents married in 1990.. about a week after, my moms entire family was shut up (ex-communicated).. the Brethren treated her family really bad and also made my mom treat her own family really bad. it always bothered her but didn't ...

Pretty basic I know, but I am no scholar. Then my colleague said that God had nothng to do with it, that it was altruistic, which I did find out that it meant "unselfishly concerned for or devoted to the welfare of others". Similar maybe, but I don't think they are the same. I would love your thoughts ...

A few years back I started thinking about church kids that 'rebelled'. While there's likely numerous reasons why a church kid would leave, I came to my own conclusion that a lot of the time it's because they've been subjected to rules and do's and do not's their whole life. They had never actually experienced life for themselves but rather always been told that this or that is bad.

Growing up in church does have its disadvantages. You simply don't understand life before being a christian. ...

This subject was touched on in another forum, so I thought I'd put up some of my thoughts here.

Growing up in church, I could never get why some pastors looked and acted so mean-spirited. It was mainly the ones from the US. The aussie guys were generally more down to earth. What kind of twisted church is it when you're actually afraid of the pastor?

For some, would it kill them to smile? If their life has been so changed and they're striving to live like Christ, is it so much to ask that ...

One of the mentalities that took me a while to get over was the thought that God was waiting to punish me everytime I did something 'wrong'. That wrong might have been real, or it may have been imagined based on church doctrine (ie, wasn't in church "in my place" on sunday so therefore I got a flat tire).

If something went wrong at work, was it because I didn't pray that morning? Growing up in church, this sort of mentality became ingrained in my head. I was over-analyzing everything ...

Its been on my mind to start this topic for a couple of weeks now. The sole reason is to have a converstaion around the questions of: "what is outreach, and why do we do it"?

So, what is outreach? Is it just bands and drama? Or is it doing socially good things? Is it just event focus, or is is it a process? What's wrong with running Christian orphanages in the third world as an outreach? Is it right to say run a "kid's club" after school and have ...

The Effects of Spiritual Abuse on Women, by Richard Damiani

http://recoveringfromspiritualabuse.wikispot.org/The_Effects_of_Spiritual_Abuse_on_Women

When women are trapped in an abusive church the effects are profound and deep. Single women may never marry since they can never quite measure up to the leader's expectations. This, plus the general immaturity of many single men who are kept in a dependent state by the pastor or elders gives them very little choice in a spouse. Both single ...

Many years ago, I listened to some deliverance tapes by a christian minister. This man and his wife had a ministry called Demonbusters, and they even had a logo reminiscient of Ghostbusters. So I'm listening to this recording of a deliverance session, where they're praying for this woman. He's telling the demons in her that he's putting them into this spiritual "box", and the blood of Jesus is now filling that box and that the demon can't stand it.
Reading the current comments in the Guest section about evangelism, it got me thinking:

You know, there are Christian communities in pretty much every country we can think of. If the people in those countries are simply building their church in their own way, isn't that the bigger picture of going "into all the world"? By focusing on our own community in our own nation? I'm not trying to defend one church or another, but aren't we spreading ourselves way too thin if we constantly ...

biblical terms) means "official" ie priest or kings. priest could

anoint others to be priest or kings . so this is one form of anointed.

but also one can be anointed by the Almighty himself , ie:David and

Samuel. the latter of the two will be our topic of this discussion.

Samuel

was anointed by the Lord. the scriptures give many examples of proper

When People Leave

by Daniel Fusco

Source: http://churchplantingnetwork.wordpress.com/2007/08/08/when-people-leave-by-daniel-fusco/

People leave churches. That is a simple fact. Oftentimes, pastors and church planters find more sorrow in people leaving then they find joy in people coming. Anytime someone leaves a church, it affects the pastor, especially a church planter or the pastor of a small church. When a family of four people leaves a church of forty, 10% of the church just left. ...

This book has some very interesting thoughts on religion as addiction. For instance, becoming addicted to self-induced emotional highs during worship services, or becoming addicted to church works because that's what keeps you on-track with God (or is some sort of appeasement for sin). There's heaps more info than what's below, but it provides some idea of what the book is talking about.

21 Toxic Beliefs

from Toxic Faith

by Stephen Arterburn & Jack Felton

Toxic faith is a destructive and dangerous involvement in a religion that allows the religion, not a relationship with God, to control a person's life.

It is a defective faith with an incomplete or tainted view of God. ...

Additional thoughts on free will

The black-and-white mentality is more solidly impressed in your mind by implanting the idea that God will leave you no option if you are serving His will. Typical examples are found in the book, Experiencing God. They imply God isn’t big enough to allow you two or more equally good choices in His will. God has only one thing for you to do each moment and you better be listening ...
